Photophormations, VDB Films Ltd, Oakville, ON, Canada

Self-description:
"'Recollecting Tibet' - Documentaries Memories: Chronicles from a camera: A perpetual History.
Over three years from 2005 to 2008, Photophormations worked with the Tibetan government living in exile in Dharamsala, India making 'Recollecting Tibet'. The Documentary examines and questions the state of the Tibetan people living away from the spiritual homeland, surrounded by westernization and how tourism has been assimilated into their culture. The film travels to Tibet documenting the Chinese occupation and the current climate of oppression. With religious practises being restricted in Tibet by the Chinese and many Tibetan women financially forced into prostitution, how can the Tibetans preserve their heritage? The documentary travels to Kathmandu to hear first hand accounts from Tibetans escaping into Nepal each year by risking their lives on the treacherous journey crossing over the Himalayas. Traversing through differing locations and times, the film becomes a visual chronicle of stories and events undertaken by one observer and camera. The narration reflects back upon the histories witnessed leading up to the demonstration in March 2008 and beyond to the perpetual past and future histories of the Tibetans. [...]

Photophormations is a small non profit organisations: an investigative team who work in unstable environments around the world producing documentary, journalism, photojournalism and promotional media for individual groups, NGO and organisations."

Institute Kern Library is in danger of losing its independent location and its unique facilities

VERENIGING VAN VRIENDEN VAN HET INSTITUUT KERN

Instituut Kern, Postbus 9515, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands.
Accountnr: ABN/AMRO 45.17.84.308, Vereniging Instituut Kern, Houten.
Secretariat: Alied de Cock/Victor van Bijlert, e-mail: alied@vanede.nl.

This is an urgent appeal for your help

Leiden, July 23, 2008

To colleagues, library visitors and friends of the Kern Institute,

The Leiden University’s Faculty of Arts is presently carrying out a major reorganization
of its Department of Asian Studies. The plan proposes a system in which the various
schools (e.g. South Asia or Tibet) will be replaced by an Institute of Area Studies. In the new
concept India will be included as a regional area, but Indology and Tibetology will no
longer exist as an independent school for education and research.

As a result of this new concept the Institute Kern Library is in danger of losing its
independent location and its unique facilities. Many of you have made use of the
open-stacks while visiting the library. Since its foundation in 1925 this form of storage
has offered optimum accessibility to the almost unparalleled collection of books,
monographs and journals on ‘every’ aspect of South Asia. The Kern Institute also contains
important Tibetan block prints and Indian palm leaf manuscripts and rich collections of
archaeological and art historical photographs, slides, microfilms and microfiches.

These sources have always been available for integrated research to students and
scholars from all parts of the world. If the collection is placed under the jurisdiction
of the University Library, it will be stored in special vaults. Access will only be available
via application through a digital catalogue. This will make effective browsing practically
impossible and does exclude direct access to our wonderful special collections of
manuscripts, photographs, slides.

The association ‘Friends of the Kern Institute’ evolved from the original Kern Institute
founded by Prof. J.Ph. Vogel in 1925. The association has requested the University to
safeguard the uniqueness of the Kern Institute Library and its open-stacks policy, but so far
without lasting positive results.

We now turn to you for your support and urge you to send a letter, preferably before
August 15th, 2008 via
the Kern Institute Library. Either by post to Dept. of India and
Tibet, POB 9515, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands. Or by e-mail, please on paper of
your organization and signed, to
D.Heilijgers@let.leidenuniv.nl
.
The letter itself is to be addressed to: The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Leiden University,
Prof. W. van den Doel, POB 9515, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands.

In your letter please emphasize the importance of the Kern Institute Library as an
unique deposit of scholarship in the multidiscipline of Indology. Throughout the years
easy access and a helpful staff have served a multitude of international scholars. Help us
to keep this service available and this centre visible!

Thank you in advance for your support,

Himalaya Atlas of Aerial Panoramas

http://130.166.124.2/himalaya_atlas1/index.html
01 Aug 2008

California Geographical Survey, Department of Geography, California State University Northridge, CA, US
Supplied note:
"I am pleased to announce the preliminary release of the Himalaya Atlas of Aerial Panoramas, the latest in a series of collections of photorealistic aerial views created [by Dr. William A. Bowen, professor emeritus of the Department of Geography at California State University Northridge - ed.] for Web distribution. The atlas contains over 700 computer generated panoramas that portray every square foot of the vast range between Arunachal Pradesh on the east and Uttar Pradesh on the west, including all of Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and portions of Tibet and the lowlands of India. Seeing the Earth from a high place allows us to grasp quickly the essential geography of vast regions that eludes those who are earth bound. Most of these panoramas were created between virtual elevation of 50 to 200 kilometers above sea level with a virtual 35 mm camera equipped with a 22 mm lens. Normally the vistas encompass much more than a thousand square miles (259,000 hectares) of the earth's surface. Images are 2100 x 900 pixels and are best viewed on a reasonably large monitor. [...] As always, please contact me with suggestions and any errors you may discover. Regards, Bill."

Site contents:
* Atlas Introduction; * Reference Maps; * High Peaks of the Himalaya; * 200 km looking North; * 200 km looking South; * Tibet Border South; * Tibet Border North; * 100 km looking North; * Himalaya Crest looking West; * Himalaya Crest looking East; * Himalaya South Slopes W; * Himalaya South Slopes E; * 35 km looking North; * 35 km looking North 2; * Technical Data.
